Some higher end models will have 3 height levels which is a nice bonus feature. If you plan on keeping the crib for years, be sure that you think you will like the metal styling in the future. Ensure that the crib rails are high enough to prevent your baby from climbing over them. Do not leave pillows or mattresses that can make it easy for her to climb over. As your baby grows, you may have to move the crib even further away.
If you have a blanket on the baby, tuck it tightly around and under the foot of the mattress with your baby’s feet touching the footboard. If you use bumper pads, they should be anchored in at least eight places one at each corner of the crib for baby and at least two spaced evenly on each of the sides. Ties should be no more than six inches long to prevent strangulation. Make sure your baby cannot get caught between the mattress and the bumper pad. If you are accessorizing your crib for baby, make sure that crib toys and decor are safe with no pieces that may break off and pose a choking hazard. Mobiles and other hanging toys should be high enough so that your baby cannot reach them. So, do not put toys, stuffed animals, pillows or extra bedding in your baby’s crib. These things can block your baby’s breathing.
The mattress should fit the crib for baby snugly so she cannot slip between it and the side of the crib. Be sure the crib slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart so that your baby’s head can’t get caught between them. Install a smoke detector in your child’s room near the crib. Remember to put in new batteries about once every year. Your baby spends the major part of the day in crib, sleeping. Therefore, it is important that the baby bedding you provide your baby is comfortable, as well as easy to maintain. The simpler the design of the crib for baby the safer may be.
