Breastfeeding Prevents Pregnancy - Between Myth and Fact

 

Is it true that breastfeeding could prevent pregnancy? Let’s find out whether it is a myth or a fact. Breastfeeding is the best nourishment a newborn baby could have. Breast milk provides a lot of vitamins and minerals that help with the baby’s immune system to fight off diseases.

Here are some myths related to breastfeeding:

·       Myth: If newborns feed often, they are not getting enough milk.
Fact: Wrong. Breast milk is easier to digest than baby formula. So babies get hungry faster.

·       Myth: Getting a rest from nursing help the mother to produce more milk.
Fact: Wrong. The more you breastfeed, the more milk you can produce.

·       Myth: Bottle feeding can make babies sleep better.
Fact: Wrong. Babies who breastfeed sleep better.

·       Myth: Breastfeed babies should not take an occasional bottle or they may become could become confused.
Fact: Right. Because babies are in tuned with the sucking motion. So, babies will not get confuse.

·       Myth: Never wake a sleeping baby to breast feed.
Fact: Wrong. Most of the time the baby will wake up on its own.

In fact, breastfeeding does not prevent pregnancy but it merely delays it. If you want to delay your pregnancy, you must be committed to breastfeeding your child for at least six months and some tips below:

·         You must begin breastfeeding as soon as possible after delivery.

·         You must breastfeed exclusively or almost exclusively (85% of feeds).

·         You must breastfeed between six and ten times a day, upon request.

·         You must avoid long intervals between feeds.

·        You must avoid the use of bottles and pacifiers.

·         You are not allowed to give any supplemental food or liquids to your baby (such as juice or water).

Unfortunately, the length of time between giving birth and resumption of menstruation is different for every woman. The fact that ovulation comes before menstruation. It means a woman will be susceptible to getting pregnant before she knows she is again fertile. This is why some form or protection is very important while you breastfeed.

So, what should you do then to make sure that you will not get pregnant while breastfeeding?

If you want to be absolutely certain that you do not become pregnant, talk to your doctor about using two forms of birth control. Your doctor can tell you of protection that will work best for you and with your breastfeeding. There are many birth control options that you should feel free to discuss with your health care provider. So, you may find one that fits you and your partner.
